TRANSFORMING EDUCATION: BENEFITS OF INTEGRATING ARTIFICIAL (AI) INTELLIGENCE IN THE CLASSROOM
Formal education is a dynamic process where knowledge is acquired, attitudes are perfected, and competencies are developed, and it must adapt to each student’s different learning styles and maturity levels.
This learning and cognitive maturation path is facilitated by an indeterminate number of resources, with the teacher undoubtedly standing out. The teacher organizes learning and adapts it comprehensively to the individual needs of each student, respecting their personalities and enhancing their abilities with a clear objective: for the student to acquire the necessary tools to develop their learning autonomously and consciously. This guidance role is irreplaceable.
However, Artificial Intelligence is a highly efficient tool that can assist the teacher in dedicating their task to this guiding and individualized process for each student.
An adaptive learning process managed by a neural network of algorithms can perform customization functions in the teaching-learning process established between the teacher and the student. While it doesn’t replace the teacher’s purpose, it can emulate the teacher in routine tasks, potentially even more efficiently after proper training. AI then becomes a powerful tool capable of personalizing learning and maximizing the potential of each student.
Unlike the uncontrolled use of mobile devices, implementing platforms managed by Artificial Intelligence allows for the automation of knowledge access, skill development, and individual progress monitoring, following the student’s own pace of learning.
One such platform is called SEK/IES ALS, which was developed in the Research and Development department of the International SEK Institution in collaboration with teams of teachers and technology personnel. It is currently being validated by students from some of the SEK International Schools in Europe and America.
After conducting several tests, we can affirm that personalized learning is guaranteed, adapting thematic content specifically, respecting diversity, and enhancing individual and independent skills both offline and online.
Undoubtedly, AI will be part of a new educational paradigm where the teacher’s role will be enriched as an organizer and moderator of the entire teaching-learning process. This allows them to focus on optimizing a curriculum that more effectively integrates content and places the student at the centre, eliminating routine tasks such as repetitive lectures. Interactive teaching methods that stimulate and motivate students will be adopted.
Our purpose at the International SEK Institution is always the same: to prepare students for the future with a rational and intelligent use of technology in a digital world. We maintain a personalized educational action process that enables them to reach their maximum potential and thus “Become Better”.
