EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AT AGE 2: WHAT CHILDREN LEARN IN NURSERY

Turning two is much more than blowing out candles. It is the moment when children begin to discover the world with overflowing curiosity, to interact with others, to express themselves, and to gradually build their own identity. At SEK International School Los Valles, this stage marks the beginning of an educational journey that will accompany each child throughout their entire time at the institution.

Early childhood education at the Nursery level (age 2) is a fundamental stage with its own identity, whose main purpose is to foster children’s overall development in physical, emotional, social, motor, and intellectual areas. During this period, the foundations of personal and social development are established, incorporating meaningful learning that will serve as the basis for acquiring future skills throughout their educational journey, in line with the international pedagogical approach that characterizes SEK institutions worldwide.

A Trusting Environment for Growth

At this stage, children experience significant changes and progress in their development. Little by little, they begin to better understand their immediate surroundings and to navigate new situations. Gradually, they adjust their biological rhythms to family and school routines, while acquiring appropriate habits related to hygiene, health, nutrition, rest, personal safety, and play.

The educational approach of teachers is caring, stimulating, and close, creating an environment of trust that allows children to recognize and express their needs, especially those related to their well-being, autonomy, and participation in daily activities. This close support is one of the hallmarks of the SEK educational model, present in Ecuador and across its international campuses.

Development Goals for 2-Year-Olds

Among the general objectives of this stage are:

  • Strengthening children’s confidence and autonomy through self-recognition, and awareness of their family and the people in their environment.
  • Stimulating thinking and curiosity, encouraging understanding of elements and relationships within their natural and cultural surroundings.
  • Developing verbal and non-verbal language as a means to express needs, emotions, and ideas, facilitating communication and interaction with others.
  • Promoting body movement and coordination, strengthening both gross and fine motor skills through play and exploration.

Play as an Essential Learning Tool

Play is not just fun—it is the main tool for stimulation and learning in early childhood education. Through play, children explore, experiment, interact, and develop skills that will be key to their growth. Together with the love and timely support of family and school, the foundations of child development are strengthened.

At SEK Los Valles, these small seeds take their first steps in an environment designed for them to grow and flourish throughout their entire learning journey.
